Your 12-Week Scan
The 12-week scan is also called the ‘dating scan’. This scan helps to give an estimated due date and checks the development of your baby to make sure everything is as expected for this stage of pregnancy.
At this scan you may be offered screening for Downs Syndrome, Edwards Syndrone and Patau's Syndrome if you are eligible. This is performed by taking a measurement of the Nuchal Translucency on scan and a sample of your blood. Your midwife will talk to you about this more at your booking appointment. There are a range of screening tests offered during pregnancy and after birth which you can discover more about and discuss in more detail with your midwife.
Your 20-Week Scan
At around 20 weeks you will be offered an anomaly scan, which is a detailed ultrasound scan. This checks for any major physical abnormalities in your baby, although not every problem can be picked up through the scan. Most scans show that baby seems to be developing normally and no problems are found, if any problems are found or expected you will be referred to specialist services to investigate further.
